Effective Teaching Influences Student Outcomes

“One of the greatest barriers to school improvement is the lack of an agreed-upon definition of what high quality instruction looks like.” (City, Elmore, Fiarman & Teitel 2009 p3)

This web page will focus on the nature of teacher instruction across a primary school. It will follow the progress through which the research team sets about developing classroom practices which foster greater student collaboration, eventually leading to more autonomous student learning.

Change takes time. It needs to be focused and sustainable.

Teachers need to be supported in this process of change in instructional practice.

Educational Change according to Michael Fullan
  • change takes place over time;
  • change initially involves anxiety and uncertainty;
  • technical and psychological support is crucial;
  • the learning of new skills is incremental and developmental;
  • successful change involves pressure and support within a collaborative setting;
  • organisational conditions within and in relation to the school make it more or less likely that the school improvement will occur.
